Association Survey Reveals Surprising Statistics on Public Opinion Re: Infrastructure Issues in Niagara Region
July 3, 2002
The Heavy Construction Association conducted an awareness campaign at local Niagara area shopping malls this spring including surveying public opinion regarding infrastructure issues. The results of this survey reveal the following statistics:
· 79% of respondents believe that there is a lack of recognition by the government regarding the importance of a well maintained infrastructure system
· 85% believe political leaders need to make infrastructure a priority
· 87% agree that delaying regular road, water & sewer maintenance substantially increases overall infrastructure costs
· 93% agree that well maintained roads attract new investment
· 64% of the public polled do not trust the municipal water supply
It is also interesting to note that approximately 75% of participants stated that they would be personally willing to pay up to $100.00 on an annual basis in order to improve and maintain local infrastructure.
HCARN includes 41 Niagara based heavy construction firms that provide road construction, reconstruction and sewer/water main construction services. Last year, the Association created quite a stir with a report entitled “The Case for Increased Infrastructure Investment in the Region of Niagara”. This report highlighted the immediate need for investment in road infrastructure and in sewer and water main construction, and was presented to The Regional Public Works Committee and to several local council meetings.
While most people take for granted the safety of the roads they travel on and the water they drink, HCARN is taking the initiative to keep people informed of what’s happening in Niagara regarding the state of infrastructure.
